This is the first episode of Freshiam BTS, a behind-the-scenes series where we go behind the curtain of how our pieces are actually made. In this episode, we take you inside our DTLA wash house to drop off the Blackfire Lava Wash, for the backfire Lava Wash release.
This isn’t a standard dye job. Our Lava Wash is a three-stage garment dye process, meaning every piece is fully constructed before it ever touches dye. Instead of dyeing fabric flat, the entire garment goes through multiple wash cycles. That’s where the texture, contrast, and depth come from.
What makes this process different is how the washes interact. Each stage builds on the last, creating an organic marbling effect that looks like lava flowing down a mountainside. No two garments come out the same, and that’s intentional.
In this video, we show:
• Why we use garment dye instead of traditional fabric dye
• How combining multiple wash techniques creates the lava effect
• What a real DTLA wash house looks like during production
• How our design ideas translate into physical process
• Why original washes take time and can’t be rushed
Freshiam has always been process-driven. We design by studying how materials behave, not by chasing trends. This episode documents that mindset in real time, showing the environment, the steps, and the thinking behind the Blackfire Lava Wash.
If you’re into streetwear, fashion design, or garment production, this is for you. If you’re building a brand, studying washes, or just curious how clothing is actually made beyond surface-level visuals, you’ll get something out of this.
The Blackfire Lava Wash is dropping soon.
